This Year’s Best Movies
“Les Miserables” You went because you love the musical, you went to see Hugh Jackman sing, you went only because your girlfriend dragged you — no matter the reason, it’s easy to say “Les Miserables” was one of the best films of the year. Based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo, this enthralling story of redemption, love and sacrifice follows the life of Jean Valjean (Jackman) as he attempts to escape his past in 19th century France. The star-studded cast introduced through Valjean’s journey includes Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron…
This Year’s Best Albums
Mumford & Sons, Babel Mumford & Sons and I go way back. Like, back to before college. I’ve been obsessed with these guys since the release of their debut album Sigh No More a little over three years ago. “I really f—ed it up this time” has never sounded as poetic as it did when sung by Mumford frontman Marcus Mumford in the guys’ smash hit “Little Lion Man.” But with this September’s release of Babel, the little British band that could goes above and beyond and proves they’re more than just a one-hit wonder. I naturally default to praising…
Movie Preview: Our Picks for the Summer’s Best Films
The Great Gatsby Who hasn’t read The Great Gatsby at some point in their lives? A staple of American literature and AP English classes across the United States, Gatsby is widely celebrated as one of the best English-language novels of the 20th century. Whether or not most students like it, however, is an entirely different matter. Regardless, The Great Gatsby has a pretty substantial fan base — the tragic story of millionaire Jay Gatsby’s pursuit of an old love, Daisy Buchanan, has captured the hearts of countless readers, and the novel’s upcoming film adaptation has been greatly anticipated for some…
This Summer’s Most Anticipated Albums
Vampire Weekend, Modern Vampires of the City Vampire Weekend, the smart, quirky, world-beat-infused rock band, are at it again with their new album, Modern Vampires of the City, set to be released May 7. Vampire Weekend successfully blends African beats with punk rock, while lacing the whole thing with instruments as varied as harpsichord and synthesizer. The lyrics are often confounding yet deep when analyzed closely. The new album is sure to follow their pattern of clever, indefinable and incredibly enjoyable tunes. The band formed when frontman Ezra Koenig met drummer Chris Thompson at Columbia University, starting as a rap collaboration….
This Year’s Breakthrough Stars
Jennifer Lawrence Of this year’s crop of fresh-faced young actresses to look out for, none have been quite as prolific as Miss Jennifer Lawrence. A wide-eyed kid from Louisville, Ky. with no drama training and an unconventional look, Lawrence first entered the public eye back in 2010 with her out-of-nowhere Best Actress nomination for the depressingly poignant “Winter’s Bone.” But this year really was the year of Jennifer, from her starring role as the bow-and-arrow-wielding heroine of “The Hunger Games” to her surprise win at the Oscars for her crazy good performance alongside Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro in “Silver…
Fall Out Boy Returns to Save Rock and Roll
Fall Out Boy is back. And it’s about time. Since 2009, the band had been on indefinite hiatus. Frontman Patrick Stump pursued his own individual projects, while guitarist Joe Trohman and drummer Andy Hurley left to form a new group, The Damn Things. And yet, with Save Rock and Roll, the band proves that, for them, there is still music left to be made. This is not the Fall Out Boy you remember, not the same band that released From Under the Cork Tree and Infinity on High. Fall Out Boy has evolved and, with Save Rock And Roll, almost…
Macklemore Earns His Stripes
On April 1, 2013, YouTube announced they would stop accepting submissions for their online video ‘competition’ to determine and announce a winner by 2023. Seattle emcee Macklemore might have preferred that this announcement were real, not just an April Fools prank, because his latest music video would have easily blown away the competition. He released a video in the early afternoon of April 17 for “Can’t Hold Us,” just one in his canon of phenomenal songs, summed up in a masterpiece known as The Heist. The launch of his independent album and the release of “Thrift Shop” in the fall…
A Blank Slate For Emory Dance Company
“Blank slate” is a phrase that gets thrown around a lot. But never has that phrase been more appropriate or foreboding than as the title of the student choreography production that will grace the stage of the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts this weekend. The Emory Dance Company’s (EDC) Spring Concert is an annual opportunity for students in the dance department to present their own choreography in a professional environment. This year, the performance, which will run April 25-27, features world premieres by College seniors Kayla Davis, Lauren Kaplan, Heidi Liu, Andre Lumpkin and Julio Medina and College junior Emily…
6 Movies All College Grads Must See
Well, fellow seniors, we are standing at the precipice of something very terrifying and awesome. But, as we had cartoons in our childhoods, such as the lineups of Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, and angsty books for our high school years, such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower, we have films to guide us through these stressful and uncertain times. The Devil Wears Prada (2006) Andy Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway before people hated Anne Hathaway, originally arrives in New York to be a journalist after college, but instead becomes a minion (okay, assistant) to Meryl Streep’s Anna Wintour-esque Miranda…
Atlanta’s Hidden Gem: Terminal West
“Is this it?” It took College sophomore Harmeet Kaur about 20 minutes to find Terminal West when she visited to see her favorite band play. She and some fellow Emory students drove right past the new concert venue, even with their GPS devices out. “It’s a really deserted area,” Kaur said, noting all the alleys and lonely buildings surrounding Terminal West. “We were really surprised when we finally found it.” The abandoned warehouses and long stretches of empty roads railways in the area make it difficult to find one of the most promising, hippest music venues in Atlanta — especially…
